The University of Nottingham is a pioneering, research-intensive institution with a distinctive global outlook. The University’s ethos is built on the premise that education can transform lives and unlock the potential of its students. This drives its commitment to excellence in teaching, learning and graduate outcomes, preparing students to shape the world around them. As it looks forward in line with its Global Strategy, the University seeks to continue to differentiate on the basis of outstanding student experience, a distinctive approach to internationalisation and focus on enhancing quality.

With 45,000 students across campuses in the UK, China and Malaysia, and a £635 million annual turnover, the University is a complex institution that needs a strong and effective governing body. The University Council approves major decisions, monitors risk and performance and receives reports on teaching, research and student development. Members of Council act as ambassadors to the University, offering advice on strategy, risk and finance.

Council has 25 members, 14 of whom are independent external members who are not staff or students of the University. It is now seeking to appoint an external Council Member to Chair the Finance Committee and serve as Treasurer. Applications are sought from individuals who have held senior leadership posts within organisations of significant scale and complexity and who can demonstrate relevant experience, including significant financial management expertise.

Council’s Nominations Committee is excited to hear from candidates who reflect the diversity of its students and staff and have broad and complementary backgrounds. They will have empathy to the values, aims, and objectives of the University of Nottingham. They will be diplomatic, with demonstrable authority and sound judgement. They must be able to demonstrate a profound commitment to equality, diversity, and inclusion, alongside a commitment to core principles of opportunity, openness, transparency and respect for others.

Council normally meets five times a year with at least two of these being extended full day meetings. Council also has a number of committees which are chaired by the Chair of Council or external members of Council. These consider areas of responsibility in detail and make recommendations and report on the relevant areas to Council. The Finance Committee meets five times a year, Audit & Risk Committee and People Strategy Committee meet four times, Remuneration Committee meets twice each year and Nominations Committee meets on Council days or when appropriate. The position is not remunerated but reasonable travel expenses are reimbursed.
