Job Details

Use your investment skills to guide one of the UK’s largest independent grant giving trusts & help tackle some of the most complex disadvantage in the UK.

The Henry Smith Charity was established in 1628 by Henry Smith, a businessman working in the City of London who left land and money for the relief of the poor. Today, it is amongst the largest independent grant makers in the UK, distributing over £30m every year to organisations addressing social inequality and economic disadvantage. These funds are generated through the management of a long-standing endowment which currently stands at over £1 billion and which underpins our independence.

Our grants focus on smaller organisations which support people for whom other sources of support have failed, been inappropriate or are simply not available. We aim to help people help themselves – targeting projects that increase resilience, create opportunities and empower communities.

In recent years we have strengthened our governance, developed our monitoring and learning and sharpened our focus. We are at an exciting stage in our development and now seek an investment professional to serve as a trustee and contribute to the oversight of our investment portfolio. You will have a strong track record of leading an investment team or fund in private equity or quoted equities and be able to give circa 12 days a year of your time.

This is an opportunity to get board level insight into one of the most respected and largest grant-giving trusts, share responsibility for its good governance and future direction and help foster excellence in our grant making. In so doing, you will be serving some of the poorest communities in the UK and empowering them to help themselves.

Applications must be received by 28th February.

Company

Macaulay Search was set up in January 2008 to provide executive search for organisations or positions that are working towards a better society or environment. With a focus on charity and CSR appointments we undertake an in-depth research process in order to identify, engage and assess the best candidates. We then guide you through the shortlisting, interviewing and landing stages of the appointment process. The process allows you greater control and is faster and more cost effective than traditional executive search services. For more information see www.macaulaysearch.com
