The Organisation

Russam GMS is proud to be supporting Working Chance with their search for a Chief Executive.

Working Chance started from small beginnings in 2009 and has grown to be an awarding-winning, respected and dynamic not-for-profit recruitment consultancy which is making a real and lasting change in the lives of women who have had contact with the criminal justice system, their children and the community more broadly. Their mission is to help their candidates to become financially independent by enabling them to obtain and sustain quality, paid employment which offers real career prospects.

The Role

Working Chance are looking for a Chief Executive to provide strategic vision and leadership. Building on successes and achievements to date, they will develop the organisation further, enabling it to deliver against its mission and business plan. They will work alongside the Board of Trustees to provide key organisational information and the support required to enable effective governance.

Strategic leadership: Leading and managing the charity day-to-day:

  • Ensuring a long-term strategy is in place to guide the organisation to achieve its objectives
  • Draw up an annual business plan in advance of each financial year to integrate the organisation’s programmes and activities and to ensure its on-going financial viability
  • Develop a strong leadership team with highly effective communication across the organisation
  • Ensuring the effectiveness of Working Chance’s services and that appropriate organisational structure is in place to achieve this
  • Developing an organisation that attracts, retains and motivates committed, effective and high-performing talented people who are focussed on achieving the mission and strategic objectives

Fundraising:

  • Lead on income generation for the charity
  • Ensure a highly effective and strategic fundraising function is in place within the organisation
  • Seeking out and developing new strategies to ensure future income streams and resources including exploring and developing fundraising opportunities
  • Increase earned revenue through diversification of income streams, becoming 50% self-funding within next five years
  • Develop additional funding sources including corporate funders through our Partnership Programme
  • Maintain strong networks and relationships with current funders, particularly trust funds and foundations
  • Build effective relationships and partnerships at a senior level with statutory, government and the business community

Financial and legal management:

  • Responsible to the Board of Trustees for the overall financial health of the charity
  • Oversee and monitor all financial activities and business transactions
  • Decision maker for fixing and assigning salaries in line with VCS norms
  • Produce annual budget, predict business growth and meet budgets
  • Work with the COO to ensure that the charity meets its financial responsibilities
  • Building and maintaining the financial reserves to an appropriate level set by the Board
  • Support the COO with organisational risk management ensuring constitutional, regulatory and legal obligations are met

Governance:

  • Working with the Chair, ensuring that the Board of Trustees formulate and regularly review the organisation’s vision, mission, values and strategic priorities and objectives
  • In partnership with the Board of Trustees, develop and maintain a longer-term strategy
  • Report to the Board on organisational progress, providing information in relation to the delivery of internal and external objectives and targets
  • Develop strategic policy proposals for discussion and decision by the Board of Trustees
  • Maintaining an effective working partnership and collaboration with the Chair
  • Supporting the Chair and enabling the Board to broaden its capabilities and develop its leadership potential
  • To ensure that the charitable objectives of the organisation are followed and that it delivers the appropriate public benefit

Representing the organisation:

  • Acting as a key spokesperson and advocate for the charity and ensuring that the organisation is appropriately represented on all key/relevant partnerships and forums
  • Seeking opportunities to expand and promote awareness of Working Chance’s services
  • Using the media appropriately to raise the organisation’s profile
  • Ensuring that the organisation forges strong and effective partnerships to deliver its mission

Managing and developing people:

  • Encourage an environment of personal development and training
  • Support, encourage and manage the COO to perform their job to the highest standards
  • Support the COO in SMT leadership, ensuring that each individual is able and empowered to fulfill their assigned role to a high standard
  • Provide leadership to staff and volunteers, ensuring that those working for the organisation are focussed on achieving the mission and strategic objectives

The Person

The successful individual will be highly self-motivated, with excellent management and communication skills. They should have the ability to work as part of a team, prioritise and remain flexible and calm in all situations.

Essential experience includes:

  • Proven track-record of strategic leadership; experience of developing and delivering growth strategies in an organisation
  • Sound management abilities with demonstrable success in leading and motivating people to achieve and exceed strategic objectives
  • Strong financial and business acumen
  • Experience of working with a Board of Trustees, advising and guiding robust decision making
  • Evidence of being a clear and persuasive communicator capable of delivering complex messages to a variety of audiences and raising the profile of Working Chance
  • Well-developed networking skills; experience of building high-level relationships with a diverse range of stakeholders, both internal and external to the charity
  • Excellent organisational skills and the ability to prioritise multiple tasks

Timetable:

  • Final Interviews with Working Chance: Monday 11th or Tuesday 12th March 2019
