Group Finance Director - The Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE)

London

£100,000

The Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) is one of the world's most respected professional engineering institutions. Since its formation 200 years ago, it has become a government and industry trusted professional membership organisation that provides unrivalled support to its 92,000 civil engineer members across the world. It is a qualifying body, a centre for the exchange of specialist knowledge, and a provider of resources that is committed to encouraging innovation and excellence in the profession worldwide.

ICE is undertaking a search for a commercially and operationally experienced Group Finance Director. With the departure of the previous Finance Director, the organisation has taken the opportunity to re-allocate certain corporate functions across the Director team. This role has been re-designated to reflect a desire to increase the focus on financial issues and financial controls in an organisation with an income of over £30m and a balance sheet of circa £50m.

The Institution and business model is inherently strong but as ever the underlying operations and business processes are under constant need of modernisation and improvement, particularly with nearly two-thirds of the Institution’s income generated through commercial trading. No professional body can stand still. A determination to improve where possible and incrementally everywhere is essential.

Reporting to the Director General and working with a senior leadership team of Directors, the Group Finance Director will be an able senior leader, both to the specific financial management function and as a wider corporate Director.

The role:

The role has two main functions:

  • Provide strong leadership in a Finance Director role, encompassing all aspects of financial accounting and reporting as well as financial planning & analysis, and internal financial control
  • Communicate financial information in a clear way to Trustee Board, Council, Directors, and various sub-committees

The role is accountable for: Financial accounting, reporting, transaction processing; Financial planning & analysis; Risk management; Business continuity; Legal compliance; Membership subscriptions and Defined Benefit pension scheme (representing the employer).

The post holder is also responsible for the following sub-committee / boards: TTL - Board Director & Company Secretary; ICE Audit Committee and ICE Investment Panel – staff support.

The person:

  • Substantial experience of financial management in a charity, membership or professional body at Director Level
  • Fully qualified Chartered Accountant with experience of working in a ‘knowledge’ business
  • Technical competence across the broad spectrum of finance, charity and investment practice
  • Ability to inspire the confidence of TTL Board and Trustee Board with a pragmatic approach to stakeholders
