Humber Education Trust

Humber Education Trust seeks two new trustees and one new member to join its board. The trust comprises nine primary schools (with children aged 3-11 years) and three special schools (which are ‘all-through' and accommodate children from 2-19 years). The three special schools within the trust cater for pupils with severe learning difficulties and multiple and profound learning difficulties. All of the schools are in Hull and serve areas of relative to extremely high deprivation. Board meetings are held at Clifton Primary School in Hull.

About the trust

Schools within Humber Education Trust have an impressive track record with Ofsted: three are judged to be outstanding with a further eight schools judged to be ‘good'. The team are working to support the one school in the trust which is judged to ‘require improvement'.

The trust is designated by the Department for Education as a Sponsor, which means it is able to sponsor/support additional schools that find themselves struggling to improve. There are already plans for another school to join the trust and there is every chance that there will be further growth in the future.

Plans for the future

The key challenges for the board over the next 12-24 months are:


Managing tight budgets and future cost increases which have the potential to impact negatively on the schools' ability to continue to provide the highest quality of education for the children and families they serve.
Meeting the needs of vulnerable pupils across the trust in a local climate where there is insufficient capacity for places in special schools, resulting in alternative arrangements and provision being needed to support pupils with a range of additional needs.
Developing the right structures in order to run the business and estates side of the trust effectively and efficiently so that the budgets available ensure the best outcomes for children.
Managing further growth over the next two years.

Role summary Number of positions advertised: 3 Roles 1 & 2 - Trustee/Non-Executive Director

Trustees - or non-executive directors - are both charity trustees and company directors of the academy trust; the role is to hold to account the executive and senior leadership team. The board of trustees manages the business of the academy trust and may exercise all the powers of the trust. The trustees ensure compliance with the trust's charitable objects and with company and charity law.

Non-executive directors will be responsible for maintaining stability and the management of a dynamic structure. The role also includes contributing to financial planning for sustainability and potential growth, and holding the CEO/CFO to account.

The role involves being a 'critical friend' providing challenge and support to the trust leadership team and offering an external perspective on solutions to issues that arise.

The role is suitable for someone able to think analytically and take a strategic view of the

workings of a business. The trust seeks individuals with significant management experience to bring depth of knowledge, critical challenge and scrutiny to its board. In particular, the trust seeks individuals with a proven track record and, where possible, a relevant professional qualification, in the field of human resources and/or business growth.

Knowledge of children with additional or special needs would be a real benefit to provide challenge to trust leaders on their work with our special schools. The trust would be interested in hearing from people with experience of children with additional needs, but this is not an essential requirement.

Time commitment

The trust board meets three times a year (once each term) with meetings generally starting at 5 pm and running for up to 2 hours. There are three sub committees (Curriculum & Standards, Finance & General Purposes, and Audit) which each meet once per term and some trustees are invited to join a subcommittee. With preparation for meetings and meetings themselves, occasional training and other possible occasional requests it is expected that trustees will need to commit an average of 4-6 hours per month (on average).

Role 3 - Member

A member is able to alter the trust's Articles of Association and appoint (or remove) trustees/directors where necessary. They provide independent oversight to the work of the board of trustees in order to ensure suitable accountability for its decision making and strategy. At Humber Education Trust the members are expected to be signatories for the academy trust, to attend up to two meetings per year, and to add to the already broad skillset within the existing team of members.

The trust currently has four members and would like to expand this to five. The role at its core is to hold a strategic overview of the effectiveness of the trust and ensure that the core vision and purpose of the trust is maintained by its senior leaders and the board.

workings of a business. Experience in a trustee role is beneficial.

Time commitment

Members are required to attend the AGM and one additional meeting per year as well as reading occasional papers to maintain an understanding of the general work of the board. There may be other odd events which members are invited to attend. Whilst the overall time demands appear slight, the role members play can be crucial in being the guardian of the vision and strategic oversight of the trust. Overall members may be required to commit around one hour per month (on average over the year) which may come in two-five slightly longer blocks of time.

Background on academy trusts

Academy schools, which are charities run independently of local authority control, now account for 74% of secondary schools and 31% of primaries - and their number is growing all the time.

Many of these schools are grouped together as multi-academy trusts (MATs). There are currently 832 multi academy trusts of 3+ schools. If the schools are to fulfil their potential, the trusts need non-executives (known in charity law as trustees) to bring a wide range of skills and experience to help guide strategy, ensure their ambitions can be soundly financed and keep their schools up to the mark delivering for their pupils.
