Our client is a tech start-up in the water utilities space. Having reached a critical size they are looking for a seasoned Commercial Manager to push their growth to the next level.

Client Details

On the cutting edge of tech in the water utilities space, our client has designed both a product and a service attached to it to sell to water companies in the UK and Internationally. Operating out of their office in Southampton in Hampshire, the organisation has grown leaps and bounds in the last few years. However in order to move them to the next stage they need a strong, commercially minded individual to join and take responsibility for sales, marketing and their digital offering.


Reporting directly to the CEO, the Commercial Manager will be responsible for strategy, sales, marketing and some general operations. As a result, their touch points throughout the business will be wide ranging which comes with a large amount of influence in company direction.

Broken down further, the expectations for this person will be to:

  • Deliver an overall channel strategy capable of delivering sustainable and profitable growth
  • Ensure the new business strategy is clearly articulated across all company stakeholders
  • Take responsibility for developing and maintaining a prospect database
  • Manage sales processes from prospecting through to contract signing
  • Be accountable for the negotiation of commercial terms with potential partners
  • Be responsible for all strategy opportunities that are anywhere up to £1million per annum
  • Create and own individual sector strategies
  • Support product management team in engaging with partners
  • Support the R&D team with product design based on customer feedback


In order to apply for the Commercial Manager role, candidates must have some technical sales experience, ideally having sold to utilities companies. Preferably with knowledge and experience of electronics, systems and connectivity services too. Drive, attitude and enthusiasm are key in order to develop long term solution projects with the sector. In addition to this, there are several essential pieces of experience that applicants will be expected to demonstrate:

  • Significant experience of sales or commercial facing role
  • Demonstrated success in engaging with partners in a B2B market
  • Track record of success in new business sales and deals
  • Experience in bid and pitch processes and comfortable leading these on behalf of the company
  • Experience in creating robust, clear and articulate business plans and growth strategies
  • Able to secure support and investment at board level
  • Leadership and development of partner relationships
  • Track record of managing senior management within partnerships
  • Good understanding of digital tools to support development of their strategy
  • Good regulatory understanding

Job Offer

This role will attract a base salary of £50,000 to £70,000 plus BMW 330e (electric car), pension and healthcare
