Ordnance Survey (OS) is the National Mapping Authority of Great Britain; it provides definitive and authoritative geospatial and cartographic data, products and services, both to public bodies and to a commercial and increasingly global customer base. Operating at the forefront of the rapidly-evolving global market for geospatial data, the business is developing an ambitious commercial growth strategy. In 2017-18, it generated revenues of £155m and over 25,000 business customers accessed its products. On average, OS services c.140,000 custom data orders a year.

A wholly-owned Government Company, OS provides the UK Government with geographic information that is used to provide essential public services. Every arm of government accesses OS’s geospatial data, which is used to deliver value and services to citizens across the country. The data is also used by a wide variety of commercial customers in the UK and OS also provides services to other countries across the world.

The successful candidate will have significant leadership experience at board level in a commercial organisation with a track record of delivering commercial growth, domestically and overseas, focused on services where product innovation and high standards of operational performance are critical competitive differentiators. S/he will bring knowledge of B2B or B2C markets and entrepreneurial environments where technology, data and digital change is creating new commercial opportunities and transforming business models. This individual will be able to create sustainable growth strategies, and then support teams in their successful implementation to drive systematic improvements in day-to-day business performance. They will be a credible, confident individual, possessing political acumen and strong ambassadorial skills with a collaborative approach and open management style. Confidence in navigating complex stakeholder environments and working with a wide variety of stakeholder groups will be crucial, ideally including experience of the public sector.
