The company established in 1924 and listed on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE) in the general retailers sector since 1941.

TFG first entered the UK market (forming TFG London) through the acquisition of the premium womenswear brand Phase Eight in January 2015. Since then, the premium womenswear brands Whistles, Hobbs, Damsel in a Dress and Studio 8 have been added to the group. TFG London is now positioned as the owner of three of the most successful premium / affordable luxury womenswear brands in the UK.

Job Description

This is an exciting greenfield Head of Tax role for TFG London which will have overall responsibility for all direct and indirect tax affairs for the TFG London Group, reporting directly to the CFO.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Establishing a tax strategy for the group, consistent with best practice
  • Ensure the efficient completion, on a timely and accurate basis, of all of the firm's global tax compliance obligations across 13 countries and for more than 50 legal entities, including income and corporation tax computations and returns, tax balances in statutory accounts
  • Monitoring, reviewing and accounting for monthly group-wide tax provisions, including deferred tax
  • Lead a group-wide transfer pricing study including monitoring, maintaining and implementation
  • Lead on the changes which will affect the group as a result of upcoming tax changes
  • Prepare communication on the impact of changes in tax legislation and tax accounting for the Board and identify opportunities which will optimise tax efficiencies
  • Support acquisitions and similar transactions from a tax perspective
  • Work with the relevant teams in TFG South Africa to ensure appropriate communication and reporting of all tax matters
  • Provision of ad hoc corporation tax advice to the business and to external advisors (e.g. lawyers) and ensuring that regular productive contact is maintained
  • Encouraging and influencing the business to raise questions and act in a tax efficient manner, and in general promote tax awareness across the group, including identifying and informing the business of the implications and impact of changes to worldwide tax legislation
  • Involvement with strategic tax planning, transfer pricing policies, employment tax issues, VAT and Capital Allowances
  • Tax provisioning, VAT and sales taxes, payroll, double tax relief claims and tax payments
  • Management of all tax work outsourced to external advisors including ensuring appropriate advice is obtained efficiently
  • Maintaining a good relationship with the various tax authorities

The Successful Applicant:

  • Corporate tax professional
  • Exposure to international tax issues e.g. Transfer Pricing
  • Previous experience in industry (goods based is desirable)
  • Line management experience desirable as this role will have direct reports
  • Bright individual who is prepared to question the status-quo and be creative in their approach
  • Strong communication skills and ability to build relationships and gain stakeholder buy in
  • A proactive nature - strong commercial mind-set
