Executive Directors – National Laboratories
Executive Director, Large Scale Facilities and Head of Rutherford Appleton Laboratory
Executive Director, Science and Technologies
Harwell Campus, Oxfordshire
Rare and exciting opportunities for two highly talented and inspirational leaders to join our Executive team and lead our prestigious National Laboratories.
The Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC) is one of Europe’s largest multidisciplinary research organisations, and is one of nine partner organisations that have recently been brought together to create UK Research and Innovation (UKRI).
STFC’s National Laboratories provide world-class research facilities and capabilities operated as a national research resource. These include access for external users to neutron scattering and light source facilities, laser facilities, accelerator research facilities and high performance computing. They also include national technical capabilities in nuclear physics, particle physics, astronomy, accelerator science, instrumentation, and space technology.
About The Roles
The Executive Director of Large Scale Facilities and Head of RAL will lead the delivery and further development of world-class, national multidisciplinary scientific facilities, including the ISIS Neutron and Muon Spallation Source, the Central Laser Facility and RAL Space, as well as oversight of the Diamond Light Source, developing STFCs global competiveness.
The Executive Director of Science and Technologies will lead the development and exploitation of five advanced technologies; accelerators, detectors and instrumentation, specialist engineering, optics and e-infrastructure. These cannot be reliably procured on the open market and underpin STFC’s science programmes and facilities.
Both roles will hold corporate responsibility, as members of STFC’s Executive Board, for strategic planning and decision making, implementation of STFC’s Strategic Delivery Plan and monitoring, evaluation and improvement of corporate performance across the UK.
Both roles will have a resource allocation of several hundred staff and multi-million pound recurrent budgets, and will focus on providing strategic support to drive people performance, strengthening strategic relationships, including those with universities and overseas facilities, and maximising the exploitation and impact of our science for industry.
You will have significant experience in a senior position in a scientific or similar organisation and the ability to gain the respect of STFC staff and communities. As well as possessing excellent leadership and interpersonal skills, you will be results focussed and adept at working in a changing environment.
You will hold a degree in a STEM subject, with PhD qualified candidates desirable, and you will show a broad-based understanding of STFC’s domain.
