Director of Design & FuturePlan
Director of Design and FuturePlan
The V&A is the world's leading museum of art, design and performance, with the idea of inspiring imagination and ingenuity at its heart. Within the framework of FuturePlan - the museum's world-renowned programme of restoration, refurbishment and regeneration of the building fabric, public galleries and visitor facilities, the V&A continues to reflect its founding purpose: to inspire and support artists and designers and to interest the public in design. The new Director of Design and FuturePlan will play a pivotal role in delivering that mission, and in leading the Museum's approach to, and involvement with, contemporary design practice.
The V&A is entering a five-year period of rapid expansion. We are launching Phase 3 of FuturePlan, extending across to the V&A Museum of Childhood in Bethnal Green, and the next few years involve the thrilling challenge of a new 'V&A East' as part of the recently confirmed East Bank development in the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park - a key element of which sees the V&A's entire reserve collection move from Blythe House in West London to a sector-leading open access Collection & Research Centre at Here East. This creates the agenda for an experienced, creative and ambitious leader from the design field to join the V&A's Executive Board.
The Director of Design and FuturePlan will lead a large multi-disciplinary team, of Projects, Estates and Design specialists, to deliver an ambitious programme of projects to transform and revitalise the V&A visitor facilities and redisplay the collections. The team provide the infrastructure to support the highest standard of visitor experience and collections care, maximised through the work on FuturePlan of designers, architects and museum experts.
The ideal candidate will be an inspirational senior leader with strong communication and management skills, experience of developing a high performing multi-disciplinary team and extensive senior level experience in the management, development and refurbishment of major buildings. You will have experience of delivering complex capital programmes, including new build, and of commissioning and managing a variety of designers and consultants to a high professional standard.
This is a career-defining opportunity to help grow and shape one of the UK's most well-loved cultural institutions. If you believe you have the experience and inspirational leadership skills we are looking for, we would welcome your application.
