The company

The Port of Tyne in North East England is one of the UK’s major deep-sea ports – a vital trading gateway to world-wide markets.

Investment in excess of £120m in the past decade has created the infrastructure to deliver continued growth enabling the port to diversify its business to ensure it can keep pace with the global economy.

It is now one of the UK’s largest car exporters and offers unrivalled agility, security and flexibility for shippers, major manufacturers and retailers. The port handles a wide range of cargo including cars, containers, bulk commodities, offshore and renewables, in addition to offering a tailored multimodal logistic solution. It also operates an international passenger terminal with a growing range of cruise operators and a daily ferry service together with a portfolio of commercial properties and land holdings.

As a Trust Port, no government funding is received. It is run on an entirely commercial basis, reinvesting all profits back into the business for the benefit of stakeholders who are customers, employees, business, government and community.

The role

This is a truly exciting opportunity to lead a major UK Port, a significant supporter of the North East regional economy. Although a successful business, a broad range of challenges face the new CEO especially in regard to refreshing business culture; developing and empowering people; stakeholder engagement; creating a clear strategic vision and aligned values; planning and delivering growth through taking a proactive commercial approach, especially in regard to building strategic partnerships.

The CEO will provide strong strategic and inspirational leadership and be able to communicate the strategic direction of the port in a clear and engaging way to all stakeholders.  He/she will develop a strong and cohesive executive leadership team, acting as a role model to build a culture of shared attitudes and behaviours to ensure the port’s values are consistently applied.

The new CEO will shape and drive the commercial agenda, using an awareness of the competitive landscape, markets, customer and technological developments to inform opportunities for profitable growth as well as exploring potential diversification opportunities.  

The candidate

Suitable candidates will be truly inspiring leaders with a proven track record driving cultural change (open and empowering); delivering improved performance across all aspects of service delivery (including safety); nurturing teams and developing individuals through a mentoring/coaching approach.

Complex stakeholder engagement skills are critical for this role including major customers, central and local government, with whom a positive relationship is critical.

Experience in a service orientated business with a successful track record developing commercial partnerships is key. As a Trust Port the CEO will have the flexibility to be creative and think/invest in the long term.
