Chief Financial Officer
Durham is one of the world’s great universities and one of the most distinctive. As a world top 100 university with a global reputation for excellence in research and education, we are currently ranked 74th in the QS World University Rankings 2018. We are a respected member of the Russell Group of leading research-intensive UK universities and currently rank fifth in the UK in the Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide.
An historic university with its heart in a small and beautiful city, Durham is also a modern, culturally vibrant university with links across the globe. With a welcoming community of more than 18,000 students and over 3,000 members of staff, there is a real sense of belonging and place engendered by our people, buildings and environment. The University has a clear Strategy to guide its development over the next ten years and has recently been successful in raising extra funding in the capital markets.
Reporting to the Vice-Chancellor, the Chief Financial Officer (CFO) is responsible for the sustainable financial management of the University and delivery of its financial strategy. As a member of the University Executive Committee (UEC), the CFO has a critical role in supporting the University’s strategic development, providing direction and oversight, and driving financial and operating performance. The CFO will provide strong leadership to the finance function, sustaining a culture of high performance and customer service with clearly articulated and agreed goals. The CFO is expected to challenge the status quo in the planning and delivery of services, driving improvement and introducing new ways of working.
The CFO will be a qualified accountant with experience as a business and/or commercial leader operating at board level. You will have excellent technical finance skills and be a confident communicator able to influence across a multifaceted organisation. You will have the capacity to think strategically and innovatively and will be adept at working in a changing and complex environment, dealing with multiple demands and priorities. You will be committed to Durham’s values, demonstrating an ability to balance a commercial perspective in support of the overriding mission of the University.
