Bristol Water - Proactive & Commercial Non-Executive Director...
South Bristol / "Be the Watermark of Governance in a changing sector & local community (whilst still driving the business case)"
c20 Days @ £40K per annum
Created, by Act of Parliament in 1846, Bristol Water is the dedicated supplier to approximately 1.2 million people across an area of almost 2,400 square kilometres, from Tetbury in the north to Street in the south and from Weston-Super-Mare in the west to Frome in the east. Bristol Water provides 264 million litres of drinking water per day via 6,700 kilometres of water mains to homes, businesses and other premises. It is a targeted statutory undertaker with a specific Greater Bristol geographical franchise, serving a discrete community.
Now is a time of change, with new ownership (iCon infrastructure partners and the Itochu Group of Japan) and a new top executive team, with also a new NED cohort; all charged with drafting & delivering the new 5 year business plan for the next regulatory period (to be agreed by 2020). By definition, this is bringing a new focus and with it, a new incisive/decisive commercial vitality into an already robust, heavily regulated/compliant regime (Ofwat) to embrace best practice and the common code on behalf of all stakeholders (with a particular emphasis on investors, staff, and the local community).
The aim is to create a cohesive top-team of joint and several professional directors (with clear strategic intent, complementary skill sets and an inclusive manner) that can lead and future proof the business in a sustainable and successful way. Delivered with transparency and clear lines of demarcation between exec. and non-exec. i.e. modern corporate governance provided through rigour, structure and relevant committees that combines authority without undue intrusiveness and bureaucracy. A team ethos of control and accountability with a local community focus.
The key over-arching element is pedigree: experience of good corporate governance as a seasoned NED (or experienced board player), to genuinely be the joint and several top-team member/critical friend as well as influencer/arbiter of best board practice. This is a capital intensive & technical business requiring strong financial literacy, commercial acumen, as well as people leadership to drive the business case. Preferably you are locally based (or at least have gained real insight and knowledge of the region from a previous domicile). Either way, it is a chance to “be the water mark of governance in a changing sector and local community”.
