Non Executive Director - British Wool, Maximising Returns for Farmers
Collecting, processing, marketing and selling great British Wool
British Wool manages the sale of over 80% of all wool produced in the UK, working on behalf of over 40,000 sheep farmers. As part of our added value proposition we collect, hand grade, independently test, sell and market the product. Our overall aim is to maximise returns for farmers through improving efficiencies, optimising the sales process and working with downstream partners across the globe to increase customer and commercial contract demand for British wool products.
The board is made up of the CEO, CFO and nine non-executive regionally elected board members, representing nine different areas of the UK, and currently 2 independent non-executive members. The nine regional board members are supported by the elected regional county members, representing 81 regions throughout the UK.
A vacancy exists for a third independent non-executive Board Member who will need to bring particular expertise to the Board in the area of marketing and sales, especially export sales.
The Board has recently appointed a new CEO who has restructured the senior management team in order to bring together a more dynamic and responsive group that will be better placed to help them address the challenges facing it, such as the push to further develop the business and increase market share at home and overseas, in particular in China.
The Board is therefore looking for an individual with significant experience in business strategy, change management and, particularly, sales and marketing and who operates in a commercial and collaborative manner within a board environment.
The successful candidate will work with the other non-executive Board Members to monitor the performance of the business and of the Executives, participate in the long-term strategic goal setting, attend board meetings and sit on such other business steering committees as they may be required to do from time-to-time. The time commitment is on average 8 or 9 meetings a year each of which will be of 1-2 days’ duration. Meetings generally take place at British Wool headquarters in Bradford.
You will receive £9,218.00 per annum on the basis of a time input of 2.5 days per month. The time commitment includes time preparing for meetings and travelling time. Reasonable expenses are paid in line with British Wool policy. The role is non-pensionable.
With a proven track record of success in sales and marketing, you will also act as a valuable sounding board and adviser to the CEO and management team in terms of its strategic options.
Circa 50% of the British wool clip is exported to over 50 countries all over the world. The major overseas markets are China, Europe, USA, and Japan. Consequently, some experience of overseas sales and markets would be an advantage.

- Strong commercial acumen combined with excellent marketing and sales skills
- Good management experience of leading medium and long-term change
- Strong influencing and communication skills
- Strong interpersonal skills, able to engage effectively with fellow board members
