The Saïd Business School at the University of Oxford is a world class business community, embedded in a world class University, tackling world scale problems.
The School delivers a diverse range of programmes, including its flagship full time Oxford MBA, highly ranked Executive MBA, a series of specialist Masters and accredited executive programmes, as well as undergraduate and doctoral courses. It also has a significant and growing portfolio of customised executive education clients and an expanding suite of open enrolment programmes, which were recently ranked by the FT as 1st in the UK (for the 3rd year) and 2nd globally. The quality of teaching, and the School’s impact on business and society, is underpinned by the faculty’s research capabilities. The coming years offer tremendous challenge and excitement. The School will continue to innovate in its programmes, and in particular build on the progress and promise of digital learning to enhance students’ and clients’ experiences. The School will build and open a new £56m state of the art facility in the heart of Oxford and continue to develop the Oxford Foundry – a new facility providing inspiration and practical support on entrepreneurship to all 23,000 University students.
The COO’s job is to partner with the Dean in delivering the School’s strategy across the range of its activities. As executive director for corporate services across three sites, the COO has responsibility for a budget of c£26m. The COO will command the respect of internal and external stakeholders and will be expected to work closely with the leadership of the School, Division and University, as well as with networks of senior professionals beyond. S/he is expected to build and maintain trusting relationships with the School’s faculty members and to be a role model for professional staff.
Reflecting the world-class ambitions of the School, the COO will be capable of delivering a world-class and service-oriented experience to all users. S/he will develop and oversee a model of effective management, delivering high performance, customer-oriented, and cost-efficient services, while creating a respectful and collaborative culture. As the School is embedded in a world class university, the COO must navigate and work closely with colleagues from around the collegiate University. The COO must be comfortable working externally with business and organisations in other sectors, as well as with Oxford’s unique academic traditions.
Candidates will have executive-level experience of leading complex organisations with a strong reputation for high professional standards and excellent performance. You will have significant experience of building, managing, developing and motivating skilled teams and maintaining a high performance culture. You will have senior, ideally board level, experience of the development and delivery of strategic plans within a multi-faceted organisation where key stakeholders (faculty) are do not report to the COO; this may have been in an academic, research, professional services, health, government or charity setting. Cross-sector experience is valued and desirable.
You will have a strong track record of delivering high-quality, cost-effective services that meet organisational needs and help to improve customer service and business performance. You will have led successful organisational change in a complex environment. You will have commercial acumen with a proven track record in driving growth and generating income, coupled with financial acumen, and the ability to oversee substantial budgets at senior level. You will have a record of influencing a wide range of internal and external relationships. A first degree or equivalent is essential, and a higher degree and/or MBA is highly desirable.
Much has already been done in recent years to enable the School to develop the strengths and strategic intent that to be a world leader. The School is now positioned for the next stage in its development. The COO, a member of both the Board and of the senior management team, is pivotal to that ambition.
