The Company

Transformers & Rectifiers Ltd (T&R) is a specialist world leader in the design, manufacture, commission and maintenance of power transformers and power rectifiers. It is an independent British company offering world class engineering solutions to a global customer base.

T&R supply market-leading, blue-chip companies worldwide, including many in the defence and infrastructure industries and in many challenging environments. These customers, from navy dockyards to national railways and metro systems, trust T&R to deliver reliable bespoke solutions to their engineering requirements.

T&R is now looking to appoint an experienced and commercially-led general manager as their new General Manager / MD, to succeed the current incumbent, and to continue the development and growth of this successful organisation.

The Role:

  • The General Manager will have P&L responsibility for a manufacturing and engineering business with sales of circa £10m, and a team of 85 people. The organisation, which is comprised of Transformers & Rectifiers Ltd and T&R Test Equipment, is profitable and has a strong balance sheet.
  • The key objective is to enable the business to grow its sales and profitability, through the development and implementation of the sales strategy. Leading and developing the whole team will be a crucial part of the role, ensuring they have the right skills, environment, and support to succeed.
  • This will be a hands-on and customer-facing position, in which you will have the opportunity to lead and develop a well-regarded business, and a loyal and highly experienced team.

The Candidate:

  • The successful candidate will be a proven and accomplished sales-led general manager from a relevant technically-led product engineering and manufacturing organisation within the electrical engineering sector. Experience within the power transmission, traction and contracting markets would be advantageous but not essential.
  • The appointee will ideally have experience of a project-led environment and specification-driven product, where there is a multi-channel route to market. Possessing good financial management skills, including working knowledge of P&L, cash flow and balance sheets, you will be a proven leader, coach and relationship manager with drive, pace and tenacity.
  • A hands-on individual, you will be comfortable, and experienced in working in an SME-sized business ideally with the understanding of the process and structure that is more commonplace in blue-chip organisations – with a recognised and relevant first degree-level qualification.
