Comptroller & Auditor General
The National Audit Office (NAO) is the statutory auditor of government departments, the BBC and a wide range of other public bodies, reporting directly to Parliament. Independent of government, it scrutinises public spending for Parliament and investigates major government projects and programmes. The NAO supports and enables improvements in financial management and the way vital public services are delivered right across the public sector to millions of people every day.
The importance of excellent financial and project management and service delivery has never been greater, as public services face the challenges of digital transformation and new delivery models. The NAO plays a crucial part in providing oversight of the sector at this critical time and occupies a uniquely important place in our Parliamentary democracy.
The head of the NAO is the Comptroller and Auditor General (C&AG). The C&AG, with the support of NAO staff, certifies the accounts of all government departments and many other public bodies. The C&AG also has statutory authority to examine and report to Parliament on whether departments and the bodies they fund have used their resources efficiently, effectively and with economy. The Committee of Public Accounts uses NAO reports to hold public servants to account.
The current C&AG’s single non-renewable ten year term of office comes to an end on 31 May 2019. We now seek to identify his successor. This is a Crown Appointment, and the new appointee must be seen to be impartial, independent, professional and of the highest integrity.
Financially qualified and with a comprehensive understanding of audit, the new appointee will bring a track record of managing large complex organisations, working and influencing authoritatively at the highest levels and proven experience operating successfully in a complex political operating environment.
