Their mission is, quite simply, to enrich the lives of children and young people with serious and life-limiting conditions across the country by making their dreams come true. They are celebrating their 30th anniversary in 2018 and have fulfilled dreams for more than 5,000 children and young people as well as their friends, family and carers.

Each dream is unique. Some want to meet their idol or favourite Disney character while others want to visit their grandparents abroad, ride a unicorn, swim with dolphins or work on a fashion magazine. Many want help with their everyday lives and Dreams Come True is delighted to provide vital sensory equipment, wheelchairs or specially adapted bicycles as well.

The Role

Responsible to: The Chief Executive
Direct Reports: 2 FTEs and the outsourced Finance function

The Director of Resources is a newly created position following a fundamental review of the Charity. This is a vital role for the future of the organisation and focuses on delivering improved operation performance and enhanced levels of efficiency. The role will bring leadership and management to financial and operational areas of the organisation: finance function (outsourced), procurement, reporting, IT, systems, Human Resources, premises, insurance and the Dreams Team, who are responsible for the fulfilment of dreams. S/he will work across functions with the Chief Executive Officer to develop the organisation, improve the financial affairs of the Charity and build effective infrastructure to support and deliver growth.

The Responsibilities

The Director of Resources will have the following key responsibilities.

Finance:

  • Ensure the proper management of the outsourced finance function so that supplier invoices, donor invoices, payments, receipts and bank payments are kept up-to-date and coded correctly
  • Manage and maintain the general ledger system (Sage One)
  • Ensure that all compliance requirements are met and undertake Company Secretarial responsibilities
  • Produce of timely monthly accounts in conjunction with external accountants and ensure that transactions are correctly recorded, accurate, complete and understood across all activities with relevant commentary to budget variances and actions required for under-performing areas
  • Maintain cost control, procurement and financial management processes including oversight of banking mandates
  • Engage with external accountants to manage the audit process and production of the annual accounts with full notes and commentary
  • Undertake to annual budget process and quarterly forecasting to ensure that income is maximised and costs are kept under control to ensure adherence to the Charity’s financial objectives and reserves policy
  • Produce documents for the Finance Committee and Board of Trustees as required

Human Resources:

  • Oversee Human Resource management and performance of staff by ensuring that annual reviews and appraisals are carried out on timely and consistent basis by relevant managers across the Charity
  • Ensure that the Charity is adhering to relevant legal requirements and practices in relation to all aspects of staff welfare and employment
  • Maintain the Charity’s employee handbook and HR policies in conjunction with external HR advisor
  • Maintain organisation wide training relating to H&S, computers, etc.

Information Technology:

  • Manage and oversee the delivery of an efficient and robust outsourced service
  • Ensure that the Charity has sufficient support provision for its requirements
  • Implement new systems in line with best practice and in a cost-effective manner for all critical parts of the Charity
  • Work with colleagues to ensure that there is best use of technology so that operations, communications and engagement is digital by design

Premises and Facilities:

  • Maintain premises and facilities contracts
  • Ensure current and future space requirement is properly planned to the Charity’s requirements
  • Negotiate with Landlords and review lease contracts to ensure that all conditions are properly understood and in particular, all financial consequences are known to the Charity so that it is not disadvantaged by the terms laid out in the contract

Dreams Team:

  • Manage the Dreams Team and its staff members to ensure that they deliver the best dream experience for the Charity’s target audience and to its objectives
  • Implement new methods of fundraising and ensure we are working in partnership with families in fulfilling their dreams
  • Ensure that Corporate and commercial relationships are pursued to maximise gifts-in-kind
  • Dreams pipeline is managed and effectively distributed in line with funders’ objectives and in particular funding received on a restricted basis is correctly utilised
  • Maintain dreams expenditure to budget and maximise value of dreams delivered

Other:

  • Ensure insurance policies provide adequate cover where required 

The Person 

Prospective candidates will have to demonstrate broad range of skills and experience. Whilst charity experience is not a perquisite for the role, the candidate must have a great deal of empathy towards the Charity’s purpose and objectives. The candidate must have strong financial management experience in a Finance Director / CFO role and shown a wider impact beyond finance in their career to date.

Qualification and Experience:

  • Recognised UK accounting qualification (ACA, CIMA or ACCA)
  • Strong technical accounting and financial knowledge
  • Working understanding of Charities governance and legislation
  • Strong excel and systems’ skills
  • Able to communicate complex financial information in an easy manner to a non-financial audience.
