Furness Building Society

Furness Building Society is a financially strong and well established financial institution based in the North West of England, serving the mortgage and savings markets both regionally and nationally. The Board is ambitious to develop the Society commercially and the executive team are pursuing a strategy to enhance profitability through development of a modern commercial culture, streamlined processes and strengthened channels of distribution. The impact of this commercial focus is already apparent in the 2017 results, with strong mortgage lending growth of 9.7% to £764M (696m 2016) and improved profit after tax of £3.22M.

The Chairman Colin Millar will retire from the Board in the Spring of 2019 and the Board wishes to appoint an experienced Chair and Non-Executive Director capable of succeeding to the Chairmanship.

Specifically the board are looking for an individual with broad commercial experience and the capability to lead the Board and support the executive through development of a future vision for the Society and further transformation and growth; with the aim of developing a vibrant successful financial business that is relevant, accessible and with a strong future.

The successful candidate could come from a wide range of backgrounds, though some knowledge and experience of retail financial services would be very advantageous. To be considered interested individuals must be able to demonstrate:

  • Chair and Non-Executive Director experience and capability to facilitate robust strategy development, business transformation and growth
  • Independence, objectivity and leadership ability; combining effective challenge and support for the Board and Executive team
  • Understanding and appreciation the importance of corporate governance frameworks and ability to interpret regulatory guidance
  • Customer focus and the ambition and energy to be successor to the current Chair
