Teachers Building Society was formed in 1966 and was created to provide mortgages primarily to people who work in education as well as to offer a competitive range of savings products. It is a mutual organisation run for the benefit of its members. From its headquarters in Wimborne, Dorset the Society employs c50 people.
Celebrating its 50th anniversary last year, Teachers Building Society has a strategy for steady but strong growth over the next decade and is well on target to meet its objectives. With an impressive record in recent growth and improved profitability, the vision is to build a sustainable Society for the future which will continue to deliver value for all members by providing excellent service and attractive mortgage and savings products to support home ownership in the teaching profession and for local customers. Proven ability to lead strategic discussions and to focus on the key challenges facing the business will be essential.
We are looking to appoint a Chair to lead the Board, to ensure its effectiveness on all aspects of its responsibilities; and that decisions taken are consistent with a sustainable business model in accordance to a clear and consistent risk appetite. The Chair will ensure the Society maintains a culture that reflects the highest standards of integrity and regulatory expectations whilst delivering the best value for members. The Board currently comprises five Non-Executive Directors and three Executive Directors. The Chair plans to step down during 2018 after nine years’ service, four of which as Chair.
The Board seeks an inspiring leader, strong facilitator and consensus builder with the vision, aligned values-set and understanding of stewardship. They will demonstrate capability and understanding of board governance, assurance, accountability, fiduciary responsibility and working with and through an experienced Executive management team. The Chair will preferably have gained prior experience in a Non-Executive/Chair capacity and bring a background in regulated financial services, ideally bank or building society with an understanding of regulation impacting the sector and experience of dealing with the PRA/FCA. Proven ability to lead strategic discussions with an understanding of the environment and key challenges facing the Society is a pre-requisite. Candidates will have gravitas coupled with a strength of character, balanced with pragmatism and above all share the values and ethos of Teachers Building Society as an independent mutual.
