Our client literally defines their niche…but they are a contradiction. International acclaim, with a global following in their field, but relatively unknown here – literally off everyone’s radar screens. The “best of both worlds” – small and agile (sub £20m T/o), but with critical mass. Financially stable (very profitable, liquid and no borrowings), but with real ambition. They have genuine brand equity (award winning profile with “blue-chip” partners), strong I.P. & R&D with lean, local manufacture…they are generating traction at home and abroad. The ultimate privately-owned SME, they seek an outstanding, incisive, enterprising and entrepreneurial MD/CEO to replace the one that is retiring.
The challenge is essentially to build on the existing platform & team to deliver sustained growth…without diluting the design flair and unique special “artisan/bespoke” nature that makes them special. It’s about leadership and hands-on management; their excellent team are delivering: they have established robust/disciplined processes and enterprising client/partner engagement (hence the current performance levels). The need is to scale this up through controlled and focused expansion in terms of people, product, partners and profits. Already US, Australian, Swedish and German/Dutch subsidiaries/J.V’s exist, with much Far–East activity as well; there is an interesting developed and third-world balance to their business mix.
Therefore an exciting international stakeholder equation exists - with trade fairs, R&D think tanks, partnering issues and customer interface going on simultaneously (all with a creative, scientific and academic bias). Conversely, there is a “down to earth” operational/trading brief in the UK at factory, back-office and commercial level. Global scale with a local bias. Capability is more important than qualification.
The role is both strategic and executive i.e. capturing “hearts and minds” (and driving delivery). The remit is design-led, but it is profit and product/service driven. The responsibility is to all stakeholders for sustaining success, on an ongoing basis. The requirement is incisive and decisive, for a dynamic “hands-on” MD, who can lead from the front and manage with a light, but firm touch. One who has grown either an SME or a division of a larger corporate, but still gets under the skin of the business, encouraging and enabling, but controlling and performance-managing. One, who has also operated on an international stage would also be preferable. A tall order. But, a brilliant opportunity for one outstanding individual to ”generate traction”.
