Exceptional opportunity for a talented Director to lead a diverse range of science and Engineering within STFC’s Technology Department

About Us

The Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC), is one of Europe’s largest multidisciplinary research organisations. Through combining world-class facilities with major international collaborations, and some of the world’s most talented staff, we’re driving ground-breaking advances in science and technology.

STFC’s Technology Department provides advanced technology and multi-disciplinary engineering in support of both STFC funded activities and other high profile international projects, with presence at both the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory (RAL) in Oxfordshire and the Daresbury Laboratory (DL) in Cheshire. The department is focused around key skills and critical mass required to support construction of facility class scientific instruments. This includes scientists, engineers and manufacturing services. Our expertise encompasses micro-nano engineering, through microelectronics, to major engineering structures. We proactively develop our expertise to meet the future needs of the science community, exploring novel solutions to problems where no suitable technology exists.

STFC is one of nine partner organisations that have recently been brought together to create UK Research and Innovation (UKRI).

About The Role

We now have an excellent opportunity for a highly talented and inspirational director to manage the STFC Technology Department of 260 staff across two sites (RAL and DL) with scope for a primary base at either.

As Department Director you will maintain Technology Department at the cutting edge of technical requirements needed to support the work of STFC and external customers.

You will also develop and oversee a comprehensive and ambitious long-term strategy and vision of the Department, promoting growth and aligned with the UKRI delivery plan.

Further responsibilities will include:

  • Ensuring the smooth and cohesive operation of the Divisions within the Department so as to maximise opportunities in supporting STFC, UKRI and external customers
  • Responsibility for the annual delegated budget and satisfactory delivery of targets therein. This includes delivery of all projects to customers on time and meeting cost and specification
  • Working with the STFC Executive Directors for National Laboratories and others to contribute to STFC’s technology impact agenda and top-level corporate targets
  • Overseeing the business development activities of the department, ensuring it reflects a balance between STFC internal business, the STFC impact agenda and external income generation from non-STFC sources

UK and overseas travel will be required, particularly between STFC sites.

About You

  • You will hold a first degree in a relevant Engineering, Science or Technology discipline, with higher qualifications and Senior Membership of a professional Institution (e.g. FREng, FInstP, FIET) desirable.
  • You will have significant experience of successfully leading a large engineering or scientific team, with experience in technology fields relevant to STFC, including being a recognised leader in a particular field of technology.
  • Experience of delivering large scale projects to time, cost and quality will be beneficial, as will knowledge of UK Universities, Research Councils and funding mechanisms
  • You will display the leadership and vision to continuously improve the service provided by the Department, along with the ability to inspire others, communicate vision and present information and ideas effectively to a wide audience.
  • You will demonstrate sound problem solving skills, good political judgement and high levels of motivation.
  • You will display the ability to operate at a strategic level; demonstrating strategic vision and corporate planning, as well as exceptional leadership, team working and collaboration skills.
  • You will demonstrate excellent communication, interpersonal, presentation and influencing skills, including the ability to build strong relationships at all levels, and to positively influence stakeholders and attract external investment.

Benefits
