Job Details

This is an outstanding opportunity to join one of the country’s market leading, household name retailers; this highly profitable business remains one of the strongest names on the UK High Street and eCommerce platform.

Following a recent re-organisation there is now a need to recruit a Marketing & eCommerce Director to take responsibility for customer relationships and marketing across all channels (high street, an innovative and unique B2B offering, as well as digital), with direct operational responsibility for all non-store channels.

Reporting to the Group Chief Executive Officer, and working closely alongside the Group FD, the Marketing & eCommerce Director will take a very active part on the Senior Management Team and act as one of the most senior executives within this brand.

This is a strategic, commercial leadership role, not just operational. The business is a very fast-paced, high-profile retailer with a fast-developing online presence and successful business. Responding to that pace and driving it, is a critical function of the Marketing, B2B and eCommerce Departments.

With such a customer-centric business, the Marketing function sits as a backbone through the organisation, understanding the customer, their behaviors, their interests and the entire customer journey, across all channels. The best Marketing leaders understand the need for multi-directional information, understanding the market, the customer’s purchase habits and predicting future customer habits, trends and opportunities… even those that tomorrow’s customer doesn’t know themselves yet.

The best marketing leaders recognize that by truly understanding the consumer, they can provide the solutions to the customer problems, and satisfy consumer aspirations. This leaves the customer buying from, rather than being sold to. Delivering this strategy is the kingpin of this role.

The Marketing & eCommerce Director will provide dynamic leadership to ensure the timely and accurate delivery of all marketing assets, inform and assist the development of the increasing eCommerce strategy, as well as provide hands-on support and technical know-how for the day-to-day running of the department, across all aspects of the marketing mix both above and below the line.

But above all of that, the Marketing & eCommerce Director will be a centre of communication across the business. Designing the commercial marketing and delivery strategy for all channels (and ensuring Omni-channel collaboration) and effectively communicating it, and ensuring the delivery, across all departments, department leaders and the Group function.

Team development, leadership and inspiration are critical aspects of this role. The business has a strong ‘team’ ethos and culture and is known as a very marketing engaged business with eCommerce taking an ever-greater impact. This role will be at the epicentre of that reputation – and for the appointee, the opportunity to drive that reputation and the use/success of an exponentially developing eCommerce strategy to unparalleled heights.

Whilst Strategic Leadership and Team Development are the most critical aspects of this role, the flat structure within the department (and business) means this is also an engaged marketing role. The most successful candidate will view this as a dual role, performing the duties of both ‘Director/Leader’ and ‘Head of’..

The person is everything. The brightest stars in this business are all about having the right attitude.

The appointee will have a proven, highly commercial and full spectrum, broad marketing background within an omni or multi-channel environment. He/she will possess excellent interpersonal skills, be hands-on when needed, possess strong analytical abilities, and be a robust decision-maker and a ‘finisher’. The role involves providing strategic and tactical marketing advice and practical support to the entire business.

Experience of managing and developing teams of marketers is essential, as is a proven track record of designing and overseeing the delivery of multiple marketing programmes, with particular focus on POS/POP production and development as well as a lead source of commercial ideation.

The successful candidate will have strong stakeholder influencing skills and be able to put across his or her view clearly, often articulating the benefit of marketing activity in business terms and have the confidence to constructively challenge senior stakeholders.

In addition he/she will have strong creativity and be capable of committing to, and delivering to, tight deadlines to keep up with a fast-paced market environment.

The appointee will exude enthusiasm and demonstrate an outstanding work ethic – this is a culture where hard work and success is expected, celebrated and rewarded.

The appointee will have gravitas. It will be immediately obvious to all around them, internal and external, why they have been selected and appointed. They will command and yet earn respect. They will be the centre of ideation within the business and will foster. They will inspire not only their department, but everyone within the business. They will be motivating as well as motivated.

Alongside their astute leadership capabilities, they will be an ‘action’ style manager. Their attention to detail will be second to none, and will be contagious. They will never see themselves as ‘too big’ for any task within the department, and will gain huge satisfaction from developing the team in every regard, form and function.

The successful candidate will most likely have come from a Fast-Paced retail environment, with genuine exposure to Multi-Channel. They will blend traditional AboveThrough & especially Below-The-Line marketing with true operational and strategic marketing initiatives, complimented by digital strategies, CRM maximization (incl. Loyalty Schemes) and promotional innovation. They will have worked very closely with Trading Teams, and have demonstrable experience of a Trading-led environment. Exposure to B2B marketing will be an advantage.

Above all else, they will be excited by Commercial and Operational Marketing; excited by Retail; excited about the opportunity of taking a broad commercially focused executive role, joining the senior leadership team and leading the Marketing, eCommerce and B2B Strategies for one of the highest profile retailers in the UK.

Job Requirements:

  • Function as both a strategic leader and a delivery-focused operator
