Transforming Defence Equipment and Support
Defence Equipment and Support (DE&S) has an annual operating budget of £1 billion and spends £13 billion annually to purchase new military equipment and provide the ongoing support that the armed forces require to operate effectively. DE&S is responsible for delivering some of the most complex projects in the world, which often involves innovative technologies, sophisticated supply chains, and a mix of market sourcing strategies and outputs. DE&S employs approximately 12,500 people around the UK and overseas, with headquarters based in Bristol. It works closely with industry, including through partnering agreements and private finance initiatives. The sheer size, scale and complexity of this operation is unparalleled, requiring the very best leadership for the challenges ahead.
On 1st April 2014, DE&S will become a bespoke trading entity in what is a new departure for the Government. Led by its new Chair, the Board will provide strategic direction and be the central decision making body for DE&S and these governance changes will reinforce the customer-supplier interface between the military command, customers and DE&S facilitating a stronger, more business-like approach.
We are looking for a highly credible Chair with proven commercial leadership skills and a track record of operating at scale in a highly complex environment. You must be able to demonstrate genuine credentials in delivering transformational change and operating successfully within a highly scrutinised environment. For the non-executive roles we are particularly looking for candidates who can add value to the board in the area of procurement and programme management and finance and audit.
