An exciting new opportunity has arisen for a Director of Portfolio Management within the IT department at Carnival UK's Head office in Southampton. The overall purpose of the role is:

  • Overall responsibility for the IT investment portfolio – both in-flight delivery and new demand requests
  • Ensure programmes are shaped to deliver the greatest return on the investment for Carnival UK (note that return may not be limited to financial return.)
  • Influence the definition, management and delivery of business outcomes to realise this return, including whole portfolio responsibility for business change
  • Define, implement and enforce a fit for purpose delivery lifecycle (inc defined deliverables, RACI and associated governance) for the investment portfolio
  • Manage the flow of new demand to ensure Carnival can deliver on its aspirations in a timely and controlled manner
  • Ultimate accountability for the successful delivery of the investment portfolio and realisation of the business outcomes

Some of the key responsibilities the successful candidate will do are as follows:

Strategic Leadership

  • Ensure stakeholders are well-informed and aligned to the portfolio
  • Use effective governance and control to ensure informed decision making and effective delivery
  • Clearly define, document and deliver a portfolio aligned to Carnival UK’s vision

 People Management/Coaching/Development/Resourcing

  • Manage stakeholder relationships
  • Support and manage the investment team, including programme managers, project managers, solutions management and the programme management office to ensure there is a single source of the truth for investment performance
  • Identify and secure the appropriate level and capability of resources required to deliver the portfolio
  • Line management of Programme managers, project managers, solution managers and the programme management office in accordance with the CUK performance management framework and relevant HR policies.

Budget Management and Control

  • Define the required investment to deliver the portfolio
  • Track return on investment and maintain the business case to ensure it’s up to date
  • Manage the costs of the portfolio within the approved budget and tolerance levels, in accordance with CUK standards.

Technical and/or Professional Responsibilities

The Director of Portfolio Management will be responsible for managing the portfolio including but not limited to:

  • Developing and managing a portfolio plan
  • Delivering the programmes and projects within the portfolio in line with the approved business cases
  • Identifying and managing dependencies across the portfolio so they do not impact on successful delivery
  • Actively managing and escalating risks and issues, including maintenance of a portfolio RAID register
  • Completing reports as required by the Investment Committee and Carnival UK
  • Managing the approval and sign-off of deliverables
  • Implementing and managing the required governance standards and boards to control the portfolio and ensure effective delivery
  • Identifying, managing, tracking and reporting on benefits achieved by the portfolio
  • Carrying out assurance activity of programmes and projects to ensure confidence in delivery of the business case
  • Establishing an effective delivery culture within CUK

The ideal candidate will have experience of leading a function managing large, complex business change programmes that include an IT component and will possess the following requirements:

  • Significant portfolio management experience and expertise
  • Significant experience of managing large, complex business change programmes that include an IT component
  • Fully familiar with industry standard portfolio, programme and project management techniques and their application in a real project environment
  • Identifies goals / objectives and motivates others towards their achievement
  • Experience of line and team management
  • Experience of applying standard project management frameworks (tools, techniques)
  • Demonstrates the ability to engage and communicate persuasively with a broad range of stakeholders, up to and including board level
