APPOINTMENT OF AN INVESTMENT SPECIALIST AS A CHURCH COMMISSIONER

  • Employer: The Church Commissioners
  • Location: London, UK
  • Salary: Expenses

The Archbishops of Canterbury and York wish to appoint investment specialists to serve as Church Commissioners and members of the Commissioners’ Assets Committee.

Job description:

The Church Commissioners hold investments valued at some £5.2 billion, which include a wide range of asset classes including UK and overseas securities, commercial, residential and rural property and alternative strategies. The purposes of the fund are to meet the cost of clergy pensions earned in service before 1998 and to provide a sustainable level of support for parishes, bishops, cathedrals and other purposes of the Church of England.

Owing to an imminent vacancy the Archbishops of Canterbury and York wish to appoint a Church Commissioner who will also be expected to serve on the Commissioners’ Assets Committee. Given the Committee’s current assets and skills mix, expertise is sought in one or more of the following areas: private equity and credit strategies, real assets (such as timber, infrastructure or agricultural land), and alternative strategies (such as multi-asset, absolute return or hedge funds). This is in addition to general investment experience at a senior level.

The Assets Committee meets for half a day about six times a year and the Board meets for half a day up to 5 times a year, usually in London, in addition to the Annual General Meeting at Lambeth Palace in June. This post is not remunerated but all reasonable travel costs and other disbursements are reimbursed. The term of the appointment is expected be for an initial period of 3 years with the possibility of renewal.

Partners, directors, consultants, associates or employees of the Commissioners’ appointed advisers are not eligible for appointment to this post.
